Malaria in pregnancy
Vivax is commonest in Pakistan; falciparum is the killer.
Source: WHO 2022| Uncomplicated falciparum, 1st trimester | Artemether-lumefantrine (WHO 2022). |
|---|---|
| 2nd and 3rd trimester | ACTs as in non-pregnant adults. |
| Severe, any trimester | IV artesunate 2.4 mg/kg at 0, 12 and 24 hours, then daily. |
| Vivax | Chloroquine, then weekly chloroquine until after birth; radical cure later. |
| Avoid | Primaquine and tafenoquine in pregnancy and breastfeeding. |
Check glucose often — quinine and severe malaria cause hypoglycaemia.
