| Passive second | Fully dilated, no pushing yet. |
| Active second | Baby visible, expulsive contractions or active pushing at full dilatation. |
| Third | Birth of baby to delivery of placenta and membranes. |

| First labour | Average 8 h; unlikely >18 h. |

| Later labours | Average 5 h; unlikely >12 h. |
